単に (ni)

Meaning & usage

単に is an adverb meaning merely, only, or purely, used to limit a reason, cause, or scope to nothing more than what is stated. It comes before a verb, an adjective, or a whole clause, and often pairs with だけだ, にすぎない, or ではない to deny a broader interpretation. As an adverb, it cannot attach directly to a noun to modify it.
