上

Meaning & usage

上 marks the standpoint, field, or respect from which a judgment is made, often translated as from the point of view of or in terms of. It attaches directly to a noun, as in 安全上 or 健康上, or to the dictionary form of a verb, and is commonly followed by は, では, でも, or by の when modifying another noun. It belongs to formal written and business Japanese and is read じょう, not うえ, so it should not be confused with the word for physical location.
