（の）上で (no de)

Meaning & usage

上で marks that one action is completed before the next step is taken, often a decision or judgment made after careful thought or investigation. It follows the past た-form of a verb, as in 考えた上で, and follows nouns with の, as in 調査の上で. It is common in formal explanations and business communication to show a careful process. Do not use the dictionary form with this meaning, since that form expresses a different timing.
