とする (tosuru)

Meaning & usage

としたら and とすれば express a hypothetical supposition like assuming a situation were true, often translated as if. They follow a complete plain form clause, with だ kept after nouns and na-adjectives as in 休みだとしたら and 学生だとすれば, and plain verbs and i-adjectives attached directly. The result clause often states a judgment, wish, or question about that imagined case.
