ものの (monono)

Meaning & usage

ものの expresses although or even though, linking an action or situation to an unexpected or disappointing outcome. It follows the plain form of a verb or adjective, and very often follows the past tense, as in 買ったものの or 飲んだものの. It sounds formal and written, and the main clause usually describes a result that goes against expectation.
