Meaning & usage
ものを ends a sentence to express regret, disappointment, or reproach that something did not turn out differently, corresponding to if only or although. It attaches to a plain form clause, most often a past conditional with ば such as 起きればよかったものを or 飲んでいれば治ったものを. It is common in formal writing and speech for complaints about oneself or others, and it always carries an emotional tone rather than neutral contrast.
