なお (nao)

Meaning & usage

なお is a formal, written-style adverb meaning something continues or increases even in spite of what came before. It often appears in the pattern なおいっそう before a verb or adjective to mean 'all the more'. It follows clauses or phrases and suits literary or stiff contexts rather than casual speech.
