まで（のこと）だ (made nokoto da)

Meaning & usage

It expresses that an action is nothing more than what is stated, often to downplay motive or to present an action as a fallback when no better option remains. It attaches to the plain form of a verb, with the past form like したまでだ or したまでのことだ meaning merely did something, while the non-past must keep のこと as in するまでのことだ. The tone is formal and often defensive, so omitting のこと in the non-past leaves an ungrammatical pattern.
