Meaning & usage
由, read よし, reports information learned through a letter or other written correspondence, meaning that a contact has stated that something is the case. It follows a noun phrase with との, as in 中止との由である, or a plain-form verb, adjective, or noun predicate with という, as in 退任するという由である and 入院中という由である. As formal epistolary language, it closes with である or です rather than casual だ, and it carries no sense of doubt.
