べく (beku)

Meaning & usage

べく expresses the aim behind an action, meaning in order to or with the intention of doing something. It attaches to the dictionary form of a verb, as in 逮捕すべく or 合格すべく, and the main clause describes the deliberate action taken to achieve that aim. It is formal written language, and the person intending the purpose must be the same as the actor in the main clause.
