かのように (kanoyouni)

Meaning & usage

かのように expresses an action or appearance as though an unreal situation were true, often paired with まるで or あたかも. It follows the plain form of verbs and i-adjectives, while nouns and na-adjectives take である, as in 病気であるかのように. It is formal and common in writing, so it can sound stiff in casual conversation.
