この上ない (kono nai)

Meaning & usage

この上ない is a formal expression meaning something is at the highest possible degree, with nothing above it. It follows a noun directly, as in この上ない努力, or follows a phrase pattern like わかりづらいことこの上ない, where the preceding clause is nominalized with こと. It appears in written and formal contexts.
