からなる (karanaru)

be formed of; be built from; have as its parts

Meaning & usage

からなる describes what a whole is composed of, identifying its parts or members. It follows a noun naming the components, as in 12人からなる or 2つの段階からなる, with the whole usually marked by は or が. なる conjugates normally, so polite からなります and attributive からなる作文 are common. It sounds formal and written, often used in definitions, reports, and academic explanations.
