となる (tonaru)

Meaning & usage

となる means something turns into or comes to serve as the thing named before it, and it also appears in the pattern 〜となると, meaning 'when it comes to' that topic. It follows nouns (often with と after a quoted phrase like ということ). The tone is neutral, usable in both written and spoken contexts.
