Meaning & usage

となる expresses a change into a new state or role, equivalent to become or serve as, and is the formal written counterpart of になる. It follows a noun or the stem of a na-adjective, as in 社会人となる or 重要となる, with なる conjugating for tense and politeness while と remains fixed. It is common in announcements, rules, and formal writing, and it should not be used to describe a static state that involves no change.
