（の）代わりに (no warini)

Meaning & usage

（の）代わりに expresses substitution or exchange: one thing is done or used in place of another, or something is given in return for something else. Attach it to a noun with の (私の代わりに), or to a plain-form verb or な-adjective stem without の. It works in both casual and polite contexts.
