（の）代わりに expresses substitution, where one person, thing, or action takes the place of another, often translated as instead of or in exchange for. It follows a noun with の, as in 父の代わりに, or a verb in the plain form, as in 行く代わりに, and it can also stand alone as 代わりに or その代わりに to refer back to an already stated item or action. その代わりに needs a clear antecedent in the conversation and is not used without previous context to offer compensation.
