Meaning & usage
The imperative form expresses a forceful direct command, used for urgent orders, instructions from superiors, or rough speech among close friends. Group 1 verbs change the final u sound to e, as in 書け and 下がれ, while Group 2 verbs replace る with ろ, as in 食べろ and 起きろ. The irregular forms are しろ or せよ for する and 来い for 来る. It sounds harsh and commanding, so avoid it toward strangers or superiors.
