やはり, often spoken as やっぱり, expresses that something matches expectation or holds true after consideration, covering ideas like as expected, after all, still, and nonetheless. It is an adverb that modifies a whole clause, so it can appear at the start of a sentence or before the predicate with nouns, adjectives, and verbs without changing their form. やっぱり is casual and common in conversation, while やはり sounds more neutral or formal in writing.
