ことになる (kotoninaru)

Meaning & usage

ことになる attaches to a plain-form verb (or a noun plus だ) and states that something amounts to, or works out as, a certain result or conclusion. It often appears with time expressions to sum up how long something will have continued, and can also mean that a conclusion logically follows.

   By next month he will have been learning how to play the violin for five years.

2. 次の４月でわれわれはここに２年住んでいることになる。

   We'll have lived here for two years next April.

3. 彼女の言うことから判断すると彼は有罪ということになる。

   It follows from what she says that he is guilty.

4. 彼は正午までで５時間ずっと働いていることになるだろう。

   He will have been working for five hours by noon.

5. 私は来月の末で６年間ずっと英語を学んでいることになる。

   I will have been studying English for six years by the end of next month.

6. 来年の３月で君は英語を学んで４年たつことになる。

   You will have studied English for four years next March.

7. 来月オーストラリアへ出発することになるでしょう。

   I will be leaving for Australia next month.

8. 彼が無実なら、当然彼の妻が有罪ということになる。

   If he is innocent, it follows that his wife is guilty.
