Meaning & usage

何でも means anything, everything, or whatever without exception, and is used to show a broad, unrestricted range. It functions on its own as a pronoun-like adverb and is followed by a verb phrase, as in 何でもする or 何でも知っている, often with particles like は or が before it. At the start of a sentence it can also signal uncertain hearsay, close to reportedly or I am not sure, but. It is neutral and common in both speech and writing.
