Meaning & usage

ては links a verb in te-form to a following expression, often いけない or ならない, to state what must or must not be done, as in してはいけない (must not) and しなくてはいけません (must). It can also pair with すぎる to say something cannot be done too much. It typically follows a te-form verb or a negative te-form.
