わけにはいかない (wakenihaikanai)

Meaning & usage

わけにはいかない expresses a strong obligation to do something because of duty, social expectations, or circumstances. It attaches to the nai-form of a verb, as in 行かないわけにはいかない or 食べないわけにはいかない. It is not used for involuntary reactions like laughing or crying, but for actions the speaker feels morally or socially required to perform.
