Meaning & usage
例の marks a noun as already shared knowledge between speaker and listener, like the aforementioned, that same, or the usual person or thing. It is used when both people know which book, matter, place, or person is meant without further description. It attaches directly before a noun as 例の + noun, with no change in form and no use with verbs or adjectives. It sounds conversational and assumes familiarity, so it should not be used when introducing new information.
