やる (yaru)

Meaning & usage

てやる normally marks doing something as a favor for someone below the speaker, like a younger person, animal, or plant. In a revenge context, the same structure is used ironically to frame an annoying or hurtful act, like 隠してやる or 泣かせてやる, as something inflicted on a target. It follows the te-form of a transitive or directed verb and requires a clear recipient. Because it looks down on the recipient, it is unsuitable toward superiors.
