とかで (tokade)

Meaning & usage

とかで gives a vague, hearsay reason, suggesting the stated cause is just one possibility or something the speaker heard indirectly. It follows a plain-form clause, a verb, or a noun phrase, often after とか itself, and carries a casual tone.

1. ご著者ちょしゃがマスコミの受うけがいいとかで何なによりです。

   I'm glad your book was received kindly by the press.

2. あまりタカシに近づかない方がいいぞ。明日仕事の面接があるとかで、すごくぴりぴりしてるんだ。

   You should stay away from Takashi for now. He has a work interview tomorrow or something, and he's really tense.

3. ところで君は何かチェックしてるブログとかコラムとかそういったものはあるのかい？いや別にウェブに限らず雑誌とかでもいいが。

   By the way, is there some blog or column online that you check often? Well, it doesn't have to be online; magazines are fine, too.

   What a mess... I suppose there's nothing for it but restricting admissions. Handing out numbered tickets or something.
