ことになる (kotoninaru)

ことになる reports that it has been decided or arranged that something will happen, often by a rule, schedule, or people other than the speaker. It attaches to the dictionary form of a verb, including negatives such as しないことになる, with ことになった focusing on the decision and ことになっている focusing on the resulting arrangement. Because it points to an external decision, it is not used to state the speaker's own intention or promise.
