一方（で） (de)

Meaning & usage

一方で presents a contrasting side of a topic and means on the other hand or meanwhile. It follows a complete clause ending in a plain form verb, い-adjective, な-adjective plus だ, or noun plus だ, or it starts the next sentence as 一方, 一方で or その一方で. It is neutral and common in both speech and writing, but avoid pairing it with しかし since the contrast is already included.
