How to tell them apart
一方で is broader and compares two different situations or subjects, and it can also show one subject doing two things at once like 働く一方で学ぶ. 反面 is narrower and shows two opposite faces of the same subject, often a merit and a demerit like 給料がいい反面休みが少ない. That is why 反面 cannot replace 一方で for two separate groups or for simple concurrency, but 一方で can often replace 反面 when describing the two sides of one thing.
- 一方（で） Use 一方で to contrast two different things or to show parallel concurrent actions, including two sides of one thing.
- 反面 Use 反面 to show opposite aspects, often good versus bad, of the same single subject.

一方で presents a contrasting side of a topic and means on the other hand or meanwhile. It follows a complete clause ending in a plain form verb, い-adjective, な-adjective plus だ, or noun plus だ, or it starts the next sentence as 一方, 一方で or その一方で. It is neutral and common in both speech and writing, but avoid pairing it with しかし since the contrast is already included.

反面
conversely; on the flip side; whereas
反面 shows that one person, thing, or situation has two opposite aspects at once, often a benefit paired with a drawback or an expectation paired with a different reality. Attach it as noun + の反面, na-adjective + な反面, or plain form verb and i-adjective + 反面, and use その反面 at the start of a following sentence to keep contrasting the same topic. Both sides must be true together, so avoid using it for unrelated skills or when one side denies the other, and note that it sounds neutral to slightly formal in writing.
