The core contrast is what kind of contrast you're drawing. 一方で presents two different things, actions, or situations side by side — they can be unrelated or simply concurrent, like テレビは受動的、一方インターネットは能動的. 反面 specifically contrasts the positive and negative sides of the same single subject, as in この仕事は厳しい反面勉強になる. Swapping them feels off because 一方で doesn't carry the good-versus-bad nuance, and 反面 sounds wrong when the two sides aren't opposites of one thing.
- 一方（で） Use 一方で when presenting two different actions, situations, or groups side by side without requiring them to be opposites.
- 反面 Use 反面 when contrasting the positive and negative sides of the same single subject.
