JLPT Grammar Comparison

にもかかわらず vs のに

How to tell them apart

にもかかわらず and のに both express despite/although, but にもかかわらず is formal and objective, stating a fact without emotional coloring, while のに is more casual and carries a sense of surprise, complaint, or disappointment that the result is contrary to expectation. Swapping のに for にもかかわらず in speech sounds stiff; using のに in formal writing sounds too emotional. Pattern: よく運動するにもかかわらず太っている (neutral report) vs よく運動するのに太っている (feels like grumbling).

With all his wealth, he is not happy.

  2. 彼は、努力したにもかかわらず十分には報われなかった。

in spite of the fact that; although; used for something contrary to expectation

のに connects two clauses and expresses that the second one goes against what the first would lead you to expect, like "even though" or "despite". It attaches to plain-form verbs and i-adjectives, and to nouns or na-adjectives with な. It can also end a sentence, leaving the speaker's complaint or regret unstated.

  1. こんなに上手じょうず英語えいご手紙てがみけるのにどうしてはなせないの?

Why is it you can write a letter in English this well, but can't speak in it?
