JLPT Grammar Comparison

つつも vs ながらも

How to tell them apart

つつ describes an ongoing process or two concurrent actions in formal writing, as in 検討しつつある, whereas ながら(も) expresses concession, acknowledging a contrast within a single noun or action, as in 若いながら(も). Swapping them is unnatural: つつ cannot carry the although sense of ながら(も), and ながら(も) does not express an action in progress like つつある.

つつ tsutsu

N2

in the midst of change; while; even though (formal)

つつある attaches to the masu-stem of a verb and expresses that something is gradually in the process of changing or happening. It has a formal, written feel, so it appears in news reports, surveys and speeches rather than casual talk.

  1. さいきんのある調ちょうによるときつえんしゃかずげんしょうしつつある。

A recent survey shows that the number of smokers is decreasing.

  2. 私の話を要約すると、社会は良くなりつつあるということだ。

ながら(も) nagara mo

N3

during the time something happens; even so, in spite of that

ながら links two simultaneous actions, attaching to a verb masu-stem (料理し, 読み, ふけり). Adding も, as in ながらも, adds a contrastive nuance of doing the second action despite the first (puffing and panting, yet still running).

  1. はは台所だいどころでせっせと料理りょうりしながらうたくちずさんでいた。

Mother hummed to herself as she went about her cooking in the kitchen.

  2. ぜいぜい言いながらも、気合をいれて走り続ける。

Puffing and panting we continued to run with renewed vigor.
