なるほど expresses that something now makes sense or that you accept what was said as true, as in I see or that makes sense. It is an interjection that does not conjugate and is used on its own or at the start of a sentence, often as なるほどね. It is conversational and signals attentive listening when reacting to an explanation or new information. With superiors, a more polite response is often preferred.
