如何（だ）・いかん（だ） (da ikan da)

Meaning & usage

いかん means how something turns out and is used to say that a later result depends on or changes with that outcome. It attaches as Noun のいかん or Noun いかん, as in 天候のいかんによって or 判決いかんにかかっている, and is followed by phrases like によって, では, にかかっている, or にかかわらず. It is formal written language, and it does not pair naturally with effort words like 努力, which describe action rather than a resulting state.
