べく (beku)

Meaning & usage

べく expresses purpose, meaning in order to achieve the action described before it. It follows the dictionary form of a verb, as in 優勝するべく or 防ぐべく, and the clause that follows describes a deliberate action taken to realize that aim. Both the verb before べく and the main action must be controllable and volitional, so it cannot be used with potential or spontaneous outcomes. It sounds formal and is common in written announcements, speeches, and news style.
