Meaning & usage

The particle と quotes speech, thoughts, or questions before verbs like 言う, 聞く, 思う, marking the exact words or content. It follows the quoted phrase, which is usually in plain form and often enclosed in 「」. In the examples it introduces both direct quotations and reported thoughts.
