Meshi refers to cooked rice, much like gohan . It is the older word, and sometimes can be used interchangibly, but the level of politeness is not the same. Meshi is more informal and colloquial. Using meshi instead of gohan sometimes can be considered a bit rude. Meshi is contained in the names of some dishes.
