風呂屋ふろや (furoya)

昨日きのう、 友達ともだちとお 風呂ふろ 屋やさんに 行いった。

I went to a bathhouse with my friend yesterday.

火事かじは 風呂屋ふろやからでた。

この風呂屋は堀氏の藩邸の前にあったことから「丹前風呂」と呼ばれていた。

Located in front of hantei (residence maintained by a daimyo in Edo) of the Hori clan, the bath house was called "Tanzenburo bathhouse."

奥向は将軍が宿泊の際の御座所であり、御殿や御風呂屋、御亭（亭ちん）などの建物があった。

The Okumuki was used as a Gozasho (a room for a noble person) when the Shogun stayed there, and there were buildings for palaces, baths, and Gotei (residences).

世紀後半になると、江戸の町では大坂出身の鹿野武左衛門が芝居小屋や風呂屋で「座敷仕方咄」を始めた。

In the latter half of the seventeenth century, Buzaemon SHIKANO from Osaka began 'Zashiki Shikata Hanashi' (theatrical comic storytelling performed inside a house) at playhouses and bathhouses within Edo.

なお、明治以前には、江戸では「銭湯」「湯屋（ゆうや）」と呼び、上方では「風呂屋」と呼ぶのが一般的であった。

Before the Meiji period, public bathhouses were generally called 'sento' or 'yuya' in Edo and were called 'furoya' in Kamigata (the area of Kyoto and Osaka).17
