It can be eaten raw or boiled for noodles, but also is used as material for confectionaries. Jinenjo (自然薯, "wild yam") is also a form of D. japonica . It is native to fields and mountains in Japan. Grated yamaimo is called "tororo" (薯蕷), and is used in various dishes. The kanji form (薯蕷) seldom is used.
