Questions from the JLPT Dec 2015 past paper

    Show answer

    Answer: 2.

The sentence immediately before ① says: '物はできるだけ減らすつもりで片付け始めたが、これが意外に難しかった' — they started cleaning up intending to reduce belongings as much as possible, but 'this' (これ) was unexpectedly difficult. 'これ' refers back to the goal of reducing belongings for the move. Option 2 correctly identifies this: 引っ越しのために物をできるだけ減らすこと (reducing belongings as much as possible for the move).

    • 1Deciding to move to the son's house is not what was difficult. The decision had already been made; the difficulty was in the process of reducing belongings.
    • 3Taking things out of the closet was not difficult — in fact, things kept coming out one after another (次々に出てくる). The difficulty was in throwing them away, not in taking them out.
    • 4Remembering what the stored items were is part of the process described, but it is not what '難しかった' refers to. The difficulty was the overall task of reducing belongings, because memories kept them from throwing things away.
    • らす — to reduce, to decrease
    • 片付かたづける — to tidy up, to organize, to clean up

    Show answer

    Answer: 3.

'同じことになる' refers back to the pattern described in the first paragraph: items come out of the cardboard boxes, they start talking about memories ('これは何だろう''それはあの時の'), time passes, and then they can't bring themselves to throw the items away (捨てられなくなる). When photo albums and old letters appear, the same thing happens — they reminisce and end up unable to discard them. Option 3 captures this exactly: いろいろと思い出話をしてしまい、結局、捨てることができなくなる (they end up telling various memory stories and ultimately cannot throw things away).

    • 1This says they couldn't talk about memories enough because packing took too long — the opposite of what happened. They actually spent too much time talking about memories, which is why they couldn't throw things away.
    • 2This mentions feeling annoyed (嫌になる) about time passing and packing not being finished. The passage does not describe annoyance; it describes nostalgia and sentimentality preventing them from discarding items.
    • 4This says they talked about the good points of their current home and felt sad. The passage mentions feeling sad about time passing too quickly, not about the current house's merits.
    • かた — to talk about, to recount

    Show answer

    Answer: 1.

After '考えをまったく変えることにした', the passage states the new decision clearly: '思い出の物は、アルバム以外は全部捨てることにした' — they decided to throw away all memory-related items except photo albums. Option 1 matches this: アルバムだけを残して、思い出の物をみんな捨てる (keep only the albums and throw away all the memory items).

    • 2The passage does not mention consulting with the son (息子たちに相談して) about reselecting items. The parents made the decision themselves.
    • 3This contradicts the passage entirely. They decided to throw things away, not bring everything. Also, the new house is small (広くない), so bringing everything would be impractical.
    • 4This says they would reduce other luggage to make room for memory items — the opposite of what they decided. They chose to discard the memory items (except albums) instead.
    • 〜以外(〜いがい) — except for ~, other than ~
    • しまう — to put away, to store (in this context: 心の中にしまっておけばいい = it's fine to keep them stored in one's heart)

    Show answer

    Answer: 1.

The final paragraph summarizes the narrator's feelings: 'この三週間はとても楽しかった' (these three weeks were very enjoyable) because they could look back on their life, and '持ち物の整理もすることができた' (they were also able to organize their belongings). The truck being a bit too big is accepted with 'それはそれでいい' (that's fine too). Option 1 captures this: 大変だったが、楽しい時間でもあり、持ち物も減らすことができてよかった (it was hard work, but it was also an enjoyable time, and being able to reduce belongings was good).

    • 2The passage does not mention sorting luggage together with the son (息子と整理しながら) or conveying one's life story to the son. The parents did the sorting themselves, reminiscing with each other.
    • 3The narrator does not regret the truck size. They say '少し大きすぎたかもしれないが、それはそれでいい' — it might have been a bit too big, but that's fine. They do not wish they had ordered a smaller one.
    • 4The passage does not express regret about lack of planning. The narrator reflects positively on the experience, not wishing they had planned better.
    • 大変たいへん — difficult, tough, hard work
    • 整理せいり — organization, sorting out, arranging
    • それはそれでいい — that's fine as it is / that's okay too
Flyer from the JLPT N3 Dec 2015 exam paper — the information the questions below ask about

    Show answer

    Answer: 1.

The key constraints are: (1) the trip is on Friday (金曜日), and (2) the children's ages. Looking at 利用可能曜日, '1日満足きっぷ' is available on 金・土・日, while '親子でお出かけきっぷ' is only available on 土・日. Since ナットさん is going on Friday, '親子でお出かけきっぷ' cannot be used, eliminating options 3 and 4. Now, for '1日満足きっぷ': ナットさん (adult, 12歳以上) needs 1 adult ticket (900円). The 7-year-old daughter falls in the こども料金 bracket (6歳~11歳), so she needs 1 child ticket (450円). The 4-year-old son is 5歳以下, and according to *③, '5歳以下のお子様は、大人と一緒の場合、二人まで無料になります' — children 5 and under are free (up to two per adult). He is the only child under 5, so he rides free. Therefore, ナットさん needs 1 adult '1日満足きっぷ' and 1 child '1日満足きっぷ' — exactly option 1.

    • 2This option says to buy 2 child tickets, but the 4-year-old son is 5歳以下 and thus free per *③. Only the 7-year-old daughter needs a child ticket. Buying 2 child tickets is unnecessary and incorrect.
    • 3'親子でお出かけきっぷ' is only available on 土・日, but ナットさん is going on Friday (金曜日), so this ticket cannot be used. This option is invalid regardless of the child ticket calculation.
    • 4Same problem as option 3: '親子でお出かけきっぷ' cannot be used on Friday. Additionally, even if it were a weekend, the 4-year-old son is free and the 7-year-old daughter would still need a separate child ticket, so one '親子でお出かけきっぷ' alone would not cover everyone.
    • 乗り降り(のりおり) — getting on and off (a train)
