一般的には、青木昆陽の薩摩芋試作の後、関東地方に薩摩芋栽培が広まったとされている。

It is generally assumed that, after the making of the sweet potato for trial purposes by Konyo AOKI, the sweet potato cultivation spread to Kanto region.

昆陽はこれ以後、薩摩芋栽培普及の職務からは離れ、古文書収集・蘭語研究に携わっていること。

Afterward, Konyo left the duty of the sweet potato cultivation spread, and was involved in the old document collection and research on Dutch language.

享保期以前に下総国銚子市経由で薩摩芋の栽培法が、関東にもたらされていたという文献がある。

There is a document saying that before Kyoho period, the cultivation method of sweet potatoes was also brought to Kanto by way of Shimousa Province Choshi City.

元文元年（1736年）には薩摩芋御用掛、元文4年（1739年）には御書物御用達となり、昆陽は薩摩芋栽培から離れて幕臣になる。

In 1736, he became Sweet Potato Goyo-gakari (a general affairs official) and in 1739, he became the superior purveyor of books writings/letters, Konyo left the sweet potato cultivation and became a shogun's retainer.

薩摩芋の維束管が除去され、飽和水蒸気による低温スチームを用いてブランチングが行われ、その後、冷凍され、解凍後、加工または調理することを特徴とする冷凍薩摩芋加工食品を提供するようにした。

The frozen processed food of sweet potato is provided by removing vascular bundles of sweet potato, blanching the sweet potato using low-temperature steam by saturated water vapor, then freezing, thawing and processing or cooking the blanched sweet potato.

昭和初期の風俗を描いた永井荷風の名作「濹東綺譚」においては、玉の井の私娼が、配達されたお櫃入りの冷や飯とアルミ鍋に盛られた薩摩芋の煮付けを食べるにあたり、火鉢に掛けたアルミ鍋の薩摩芋、山盛りの沢庵とともに、茶漬けをさらさら掻きこむ描写が描かれている。

In Kafu NAGAI's famed novel 'Bokuto Kidan' (A Strange Tale from East of the River) which depicts the life and manners of Japanese people in the early Showa period, he described how a prostitute of Tamanoi ate cold rice in a wooden container and an aluminum pot of cooked sweet potatoes with soy sauce; she ate chazuke together with the potatoes warmed on hibachi (a brazier) and heaped takuan (pickled radish).

昆陽の薩摩芋試作が関東における普及に直接繋がったかは、佐藤信淵の指摘（後述「昆陽と佐藤信淵」を参照）に見られるように疑問視する説もあるが、昆陽が同時代に薩摩芋によって名声を得ていたことは事実であり、後世"甘藷先生"と称され、墓所の瀧泉寺（目黒不動）には「甘藷先生之墓」がある。

Though there is a theory that doubts whether the sweet potatoes made by Konyo for trial purposes led directly to the spread in Kanto, as pointed out by Nobuhiro SATO (refer to the "Konyo and Nobuhiro SATO" mentioned later), it is a fact that Konyo had gotten fame because of the sweet potatoes in the same period, and was called 'Sweet Potato Teacher' by future generations.

いずれにしても、昆陽の試作が、幕府（町奉行）が行った本格的な試作であったこと、「蕃薯考」が出版され、栽培の普及を意図したこと、この試作以降、薩摩芋を幕府が救荒作物として考えるようになったことなどから、この試作が、薩摩芋の関東への普及にとって画期的な事件であったと位置づけられている。

Anyway, because Konyo's trial pieces were the real trial prototype that the shogunate (magistrate of the town) had done, 'Idea of Sweet Potatoes' was published, the spread of cultivation was intended, the shogunate came to regard the sweet potato as an emergency crop after this experimental trial, and this experimental trial led to an epoch-making event for the spread of the sweet potato to Kanto, thus Konyo's status was firmed.
