How to tell them apart
逆に introduces the opposite side or a result contrary to expectation, as in 緊張しすぎはだめで、逆にリラックスしすぎもだめだ. むしろ selects one option as more suitable to express preference or correction, as in 外で遊ぶよりむしろ家で読みたい. Therefore 逆に cannot replace a simple preference, and むしろ cannot report an unintended opposite outcome.

Contrarily; in reverse; as an alternative
逆に is an adverb meaning on the contrary, conversely, or in the opposite direction. It is used when the second situation reverses the first, or when a result is opposite to what was expected or intended. It stands alone before a verb, adjective, or whole clause and needs no special conjugation, as in 逆に数える or 逆に乾燥する. It is neutral in register and common in both speech and writing, but it must signal a clear reversal rather than adding unrelated information.

むしろ mushiro

むしろ is an adverb that presents the following statement as more accurate or more desirable than a stated or implied alternative. It is placed directly before the preferred predicate, which can be a verb, an i-adjective or na-adjective, or a noun plus だ, and it often appears with patterns like AよりむしろB, AというよりむしろB, or くらいならむしろ. It is neutral in register, but it needs a contrast to sound natural and cannot express degree as in rather cold.
