Questions from the JLPT July 2011 past paper

    Answer: 3.

The underlined このこと appears at the start of the second paragraph. It refers back to the content of the preceding paragraph, specifically the final sentence: '昔は子どもは外で遊ぶことが多かったが、今は一人で、室内でテレビを見たり、ゲームをしたりすることが多い' (In the past children often played outside, but now they often play alone indoors watching TV or playing games). (This has had a major impact on children in two ways) then introduces the two effects. Option 3, '子どもが一人で家の中で遊ぶようになったこと' (children have come to play alone inside the house), correctly captures this referent.

    • 1町の中に公園や子どもの遊ぶ場所が増えてきたこと — The passage says the opposite: parks and open spaces have been reduced (削られてきた) and outdoor play areas have decreased (減少した).
    • 2昔は子どもが家の外で遊ぶことが多かったこと — This describes the past situation, not the current change that このこと refers to. このこと refers to the shift to indoor solitary play, not the old habit of playing outside.
    • 4以前に比べて子どもの体力がなくなってきたこと — This is one of the effects (影響) described in the second paragraph, not the cause (このこと) that produced the effects. The question asks what このこと refers to, which is the change in how children play.
    • このこと — this (thing); this matter — refers to the previously described change
    • けずられる — to be reduced; to be cut down (passive of 削る)

    Answer: 2.

The passage describes two changes in children: (1) declining physical strength because opportunities to move their bodies outdoors have decreased, and (2) increasing inability to form relationships because they spend more time alone indoors. Option 2, '体を動かさないで遊ぶことが増えて、体力が落ちている' (playing without moving the body has increased, and physical strength has declined), matches the first change described: '外で体を動かして遊ぶ機会が減ったことが、最大の原因' (the decrease in opportunities to play outside moving the body is the biggest cause).

    • 1外で一人で遊ぶ時間が少なくなって、体力が落ちている — The passage says children now play alone indoors, not that they used to play alone outdoors. The issue is the shift from outdoor active play to indoor sedentary play, not a reduction in solitary outdoor play.
    • 3友達との遊びの中で、よい付き合い方が学習できるようになった — The passage says the opposite: children today are worse at forming relationships (人間関係がうまく作れない子供が増えてしまった). In the past they learned social skills through outdoor group play; now that has been lost.
The passage never claims TV or games teach good social skills. It says the opposite — indoor solitary play has led to poorer social skills.
    • 付き合い方(つきあいかた) — way of interacting with others; social skills

    Show answer

    Answer: 1.

The final sentence is the author's main point: 'これからも日本の町は発展していくだろうが、それが子供に与える影響も忘れてはいけない' (Japan's towns will continue to develop, but we must not forget the impact that has on children). This means: while urban development will continue, we must pay attention to its negative effects on children. (We must pay attention to the fact that urban development is giving children negative impacts), captures this message.

    • 2町が発展しない場合、子どもにも悪い影響が出ることを忘れてはいけない — The author says development WILL continue and we must not forget its impact. This option incorrectly frames the problem as what happens when development does NOT occur, which is the opposite of the passage's message.
    • 3子どもに悪い影響が出ているので、町を発展する前の状態に戻したほうがいい — The author does not advocate returning towns to their previous state. They acknowledge development will continue (発展していくだろう) and simply urge awareness of its effects, not reversal.
    • 4子どもに悪い影響を与えてしまうことはあるが、町は発展したほうがいい — While this acknowledges both development and negative effects, it frames development as desirable (発展したほうがいい), which goes beyond the passage. The author says development will happen, not that it should be prioritized. The emphasis is on not forgetting the impact, making option 1 a better match.
    • わすれてはいけない — must not forget
    • 次々つぎつぎ — one after another; successively
