Questions from the JLPT Dec 2012 past paper

    Answer: 1.

The writer was skiing for the first time and got tired by the afternoon of day 1, so they decided to go back to the hotel first and rest while waiting for their friends. Option 1 correctly captures this reason — they wanted to rest at the hotel.

    • 2The text says the writer went back 'first' (先に) to wait for their friends, meaning the friends were still out skiing, not waiting at the hotel. This option reverses the situation.
    • 3The writer did walk in the snowy mountains, but that was on the next day (翌日) after discovering the poster at the hotel. Going back to the hotel on day 1 was not motivated by a desire to walk in the mountains alone.
    • 4The writer heard the explanation about the snowy mountain walk after returning to the hotel and seeing the poster. They had not planned to hear the explanation beforehand; it was a chance discovery.
    • さき — first, before (others); ahead of
    • もどって — return, go back (te-form of 戻る)
    • つかれてしまった — became tired (with nuance of regret/unavoidability)

    Answer: 2.

Participants must wear ski clothes and gloves, plus waterproof boots — but ski boots are not allowed because they are hard to walk in. Option 2 correctly matches: ski clothes and gloves, with waterproof boots that are NOT ski boots.

    • 1This option says the boots should also be ski boots, but the text explicitly says ski boots are 'だめ' (not acceptable) because they are hard to walk in.
    • 3This option says clothes and gloves should be everyday (日常用) ones, but the text says they should be ski-type (スキー用).
    • 4This option says both clothes/gloves should be everyday type AND boots should be non-ski boots. While the boot part is correct, the clothes and gloves must be ski-type, not everyday type.
    • につけ — put on, wear (te-form of 身につける)
    • あるきにくい — hard to walk in

    Show answer

    Answer: 4.

The writer couldn't ski much and didn't improve, but discovered another kind of enjoyment — walking in the snowy mountains and seeing nature. Option 4 correctly captures this: they couldn't do much skiing, but enjoyed walking in the snowy mountains, so they thought it would be fine to come again.

    • 1This option says they enjoyed skiing AND saw animals. But the text says they couldn't ski much (あまり滑れなかった), so they did not fully enjoy skiing. Also, the emphasis is on the snowy mountain walk as the alternative enjoyment, not specifically on seeing animals.
    • 2This option says they couldn't enjoy skiing but could see animals. While they did see animal tracks, the key reason is the broader enjoyment of walking in the snowy mountains (雪山を歩いて楽しむ), not just seeing animals. Also, the phrasing '雪山で動物を見ることができた' is too narrow.
    • 3This option says they got better at skiing AND enjoyed walking. But the text explicitly says 'スキーは上手にならなかった' (did not improve at skiing), so this is factually wrong.
    • すべれなかった — could not ski/slide (potential negative past of 滑る)
    • 上手じょうずにならなかった — did not become better/skilled
    • たのしみ — enjoyment, something to look forward to
