Questions from the JLPT Dec 2012 past paper

    Show answer

    Answer: 1.

The key reason is that shelves (棚) are stacked vertically (上下に何段も棚を重ねて), so each shelf can grow vegetables independently. This means that even in the same floor area, you can use multiple levels — producing more than a field. Option 1 correctly captures this: '棚を重ねて使って育てるから' (because vegetables are grown using stacked shelves).

    • 2電気の光を使って育てる (growing with electric light) is mentioned in the first sentence as a general description of the factory, but it is not the reason given for producing MORE vegetables. Electric light is about how the plants get light, not about quantity per area.
    • 3広い場所で育てている (growing in a wide space) is incorrect. The passage explicitly says '同じ広さの場所でも' (even in a place of the same area), meaning the factory does NOT need a wider space — it produces more in the SAME area.
    • 4建物の中で育てている (growing inside a building) is true as a general fact, but it is not the reason for higher production. The reason is specifically the vertical stacking of shelves, not merely being indoors.
    • たな — shelf, rack
    • かさねる — to stack, to pile up

    Answer: 1.

This means humans can set the temperature, humidity, and light exposure time — these are the 'environment' that humans create. Option 1, '野菜がよく育つように、エアコンで適当な温度にする' (setting an appropriate temperature with air conditioning so vegetables grow well), directly matches the idea of controlling temperature, which is the first example given in the text.

    • 2棚の高さを工夫する (adjusting shelf height) is mentioned later in the passage, but in the context of making work easier for farmers (仕事がしやすい高さ), not in the context of protecting vegetables from insects. This mixes two different points.
    • 3太陽の光がよく当たるように (so sunlight hits well) is incorrect because the factory uses electric light (電気の光), not sunlight. The passage says light exposure TIME is controlled, not that sunlight is maximized.
    • 4温度をいつも同じにしておく (keeping the temperature always the same) is not what the passage says. The point is that temperature can be SET/DECIDED (決められる) appropriately — for example, growing summer vegetables in winter — not that it is kept constant. Also, the purpose is for the vegetables, not for the workers' comfort.
    • びる — to be exposed to (light, etc.)

    Show answer

    Answer: 3.

The passage states two key things about factory-grown vegetables: (1) '工場で作られた野菜は安心して食べられます' (vegetables grown in the factory can be eaten with peace of mind — because no pesticides are needed), and (2) '工場を作るのにかなりの建設費がかかります...電気代もかかります' (considerable construction costs and electricity costs are involved). Option 3, '安心して食べられるが、作るのにお金がかかる' (safe to eat, but costs money to produce), accurately combines these two points from the text.

    • 1畑で作るより安く作れる (cheaper to produce than in a field) is the opposite of what the text says. The passage explicitly mentions high construction costs (建設費) and electricity costs (電気代). Also, the text says factory vegetables can be MORE nutritious, not less.
    • 2一度にたくさん作れない (cannot produce a lot at once) contradicts the passage, which states that stacked shelves allow producing more vegetables than a field of the same area (①多くの野菜を生産することができます).
    • 4いろいろな種類がある (there are many varieties) is the opposite of what the text says: '作れる野菜の種類もまだ少ない' (the types of vegetables that can be grown are still few).
    • 安心あんしん — peace of mind, safe

    Show answer

    Answer: 3.

The final paragraph summarizes the author's view: the passage lists many advantages (more production, controlled environment, no pesticides, easier work) and also problems (costs, limited variety, taste). This means: although it may take time, in a country like Japan with limited land, production using vegetable factories must be increased in the future. Option 3, '問題はあるがいい点も多く、将来は工場での野菜の生産を増やしていく必要がある' (there are problems but also many good points, and in the future it is necessary to increase factory vegetable production), matches this conclusion perfectly.

    • 1今まで以上に畑で育てた野菜の生産を増やす必要がある (need to increase field-grown vegetable production more than before) is the opposite of the author's conclusion, which advocates increasing FACTORY production, not field production.
    • 2工場以外で野菜を作る新しい技術を考える必要がある (need to think of new technology for growing vegetables outside factories) is not mentioned anywhere. The research mentioned is for solving problems WITHIN vegetable factory technology, not for alternatives to factories.
    • 4すぐに野菜工場の建設を始める必要がある (need to start building vegetable factories immediately) is incorrect. The author says '時間がかかるかもしれませんが' (it may take time), implying this is not something to do immediately. The problems have NOT yet been solved — research is ongoing.
    • やす — to increase
