N3 Reading · Test 45

Questions from the JLPT July 2014 past paper

    Answer: 2.

Option 2 is correct. The passage states that the narrator loved drawing and was often praised for it (絵を描くのが好きで、よく人に絵をほめられていました), but was not good at subjects like Japanese and math (国語や数学などの勉強はあまりよくできませんでした). The teacher also noted that her art grades were good but other subjects needed improvement. Option 2 captures both sides: she was good at art but struggled with non-art subjects.

    • 1This says she had good grades in all subjects (どの科目の成績も悪くない), which contradicts the passage stating she was not good at Japanese, math, etc.
    • 3This says her art grades were not good (美術の成績はあまりよくない), but the passage clearly states her art grades were good (美術の成績はいい).
    • 4This says she was good at all subjects and praised by the teacher (どの科目の勉強も頑張っていて、先生にほめられる), but the teacher actually said she needed to work harder on other subjects.
    • ばす — to develop, to nurture, to grow (a talent)
    • 得意とくい — strong point, something one is good at

    Answer: 1.

Option 1 is correct. The mother's words in the passage are: '愛は頑張って勉強しているんですが、テストで点が取れません。 This means: even if the daughter cannot get good test scores in weak subjects, that is fine; the mother wants to let her develop what she is good at (art). Option 1 matches this exactly:

    • 2This says the mother also wants the daughter to get good test scores (テストでもいい点が取れるようにさせたい), but the mother explicitly said '私はそれでいいと思っているんです' — she accepted the low scores.
    • 3This is about asking the teacher to let the daughter ask questions, which was the teacher's suggestion, not the mother's idea
    • 4This says the mother wants the daughter to work harder at both weak subjects and strengths (もっと一生懸命に頑張ってほしい), but the mother accepted the situation as-is and wanted to focus on art.
    • 苦手にがて — weak subject, something one is not good at
    • ばしてやりたい — want to help (someone) develop/grow (a talent)
    • お考え(おかんがえ) — thoughts, way of thinking (honorific)

    Answer: 3.

Option 3 is correct. The narrator graduated from an art vocational school and now works doing what she loves — drawing. She wants to thank her mother because the mother did not pressure her about grades とは言わず) and let her draw freely (自由に絵を描かせてくれました), wanting to nurture her artistic talent. This allowed the narrator to pursue a career in art. Option 3 captures this: the mother didn't worry about grades and wanted to develop her drawing ability, which let her follow the path she loves.

    • 1The passage does not say the mother told the teacher the narrator was 'very good' at art in a way that gave her self-confidence to live life; this overstates the effect and misrepresents the mother's words.
    • 2The passage does not mention the narrator learning to have 'broader thinking' (広い考えを持てるようになった); this is not supported by the text.
    • 4The mother did not teach the narrator the importance of asking questions (質問することの大切さ); it was the teacher who encouraged her to ask questions, and the passage does not say this made her a proactive person.
    • すす — to advance, to proceed (along a path)
