Questions from the JLPT 2018 past paper

    Answer: 4.

The passage states that Tokyo Station was too big and the narrator could not find where to transfer: 「東京駅は広すぎて、乗り換える電車の場所がわかりませんでした。」She was walking back and forth with a memo, and then thought 「どうしよう。」(What should I do?). Option 4 directly matches this: she didn't know where the train she wanted to catch was.

    • 1This reverses the order of events. A stranger (Yamada-san) called out to her AFTER she was already in trouble; being spoken to by a stranger was not the cause of her worry.
    • 2The passage never says she got off at the wrong station. She needed to transfer trains at Tokyo Station, not that she mistakenly got off there.
    • 3The passage says she was going to a friend's house, not looking for a friend at the station. Her problem was finding the right train platform, not finding a friend.
What should I do? (expression of worry/distress)

    Show answer

    Answer: 2.

The passage explicitly states: 「山田さんは駅の中にある喫茶店でお茶を飲みながら、私が行ったり来たりしているのを見ていたそうです。」Yamada-san was drinking tea at a café in the station and saw the narrator walking back and forth, which prompted her to call out. Option 2 matches this exactly.

    • 1The passage mentions the narrator had a memo, but never says she dropped it or that Yamada-san picked it up.
    • 3There is no mention of Yamada-san mistaking the narrator for a friend. She noticed the narrator looked lost.
    • 4Yamada-san was already drinking tea at the café; she did not call out because she wanted to drink tea together. She called out out of concern.
    • こえをかける — to call out to someone / to speak to someone

    Show answer

    Answer: 2.

The narrator asked Yamada-san 「時間は大丈夫ですか。」(Is your time okay?), showing concern that helping might make Yamada-san late for her own train back to Kyoto. Yamada-san reassured her that there are many shinkansen, so the next one is fine. The narrator then said 「本当にありがとうございます。」—she was grateful because Yamada-san took the time to guide her even though it could delay her own return trip. Option 2 captures this perfectly.

    • 1Yamada-san did mention there are many shinkansen to Kyoto, but that was to reassure the narrator about her own time, not the reason for the gratitude. The gratitude was for being guided.
    • 3This misreads the passage. Yamada-san said she was helped by various people when she lived abroad; she did not help people in the narrator's country.
    • 4Yamada-san did reassure the narrator about time, but the gratitude was for the act of guiding her to the platform despite the risk of being late, not simply for worrying about the schedule.
    • お礼を言う(おれいをいう) — to express gratitude / to thank someone
    • 案内あんないする — to guide / to show the way
Shinkansen (bullet train)

    Show answer

    Answer: 1.

The final paragraph says the narrator's heart became warm remembering Yamada-san's words, and then: 「私も山田さんみたいに( )と思いました。」(I also thought I want to be like Yamada-san and...). Yamada-san was kind to a stranger in trouble, saying she herself had been helped by many people when living abroad. The natural conclusion is that the narrator wants to likewise be kind to people in trouble. (Let me be kind to people in trouble) — fits perfectly.

    • 2Living abroad is what Yamada-san did in the past; it is not the lesson the narrator took away from the encounter.
    • 3Work is mentioned only as the reason Yamada-san came to Tokyo; it is not the theme of the essay.
    • 4While the narrator had trouble at Tokyo Station, the essay's message is about kindness to strangers, not about learning the station layout.
    • こまっている — being in trouble / having difficulty
    • 親切しんせつにする — to be kind (to someone)
