How to tell them apart
せいで blames a cause for a bad outcome, so it only fits negative results like 車が売れない; using it for a good outcome sounds wrong. ために is broader, covering purpose (研究のために行く), benefit, and neutral cause, so it works where せいで cannot. The key test is whether the result is undesirable and whether you are assigning fault versus stating a reason or goal.
- せい Use せいで when the cause produces an undesirable result and you want to assign blame.
- 為(に)・ため(に) Use ために when expressing purpose, benefit, or a neutral reason rather than fault.

せい sei
owing to, for the fault of (unfavorable cause)
せい attributes a bad result to a cause, often with a nuance of blame. It follows a noun with の, as in 貧しさのせいで, and appears in patterns like せいにする, to blame something on someone. It is used for negative outcomes, not neutral or good ones.

彼女の失敗の原因を勤勉さがなかったせいにすべきでない。

-
彼の失敗の原因を勤勉さがなかったせいにすべきではない。

為(に)・ため(に) ni tame ni
In order to; for the sake of; because of this
為(に)expresses purpose or benefit, meaning 'for the sake of' or 'in order to'. After a verb it takes the plain form (見るために), and after a noun it takes の (老人のための). It can also refer to a reason already stated, as in このため ('for this reason').
-

-
