ウェブ時代に突入して、私たちの生活には、世界中のありとあらゆる情報が溢れかえることとなった。その量は膨大で、しかも、時間とともに流れ去ることもなく、データとして刻々と蓄えられ続けている。一方で、私たちの毎日はといえば、相も変わらず 24 時間しかなく、寿命は 80 年程度だ。どうやったって、そのすべてを網羅することなどできない。

私たちは、仕方なく、どんな情報とも、どんな言葉とも、忙しなく (注 1) 、広く浅いつきあいをするようになって、ふと我に返ると、自分は果たして、本当に、以前よりも、世間や人間に対する理解が深まっているのだろうかと、不安を感じるようになっている。

そういう時代に、小説は、まさしく「小さく説く」のである。

この広大無辺 (注 2) で、複雑極まりない世の中を、そして、そこに生きる人間の心の奥底を、誰の手のひらにでも収まるほどのコンパクトなサイズに圧縮して、濃密な時間とともに体験させてくれる。それが、小説だ。確かに小説は、絵や彫刻のように、一目でみることのできる物体ではない。ある一定量の記号の連なりである以上、時間をかけて、前から順番に最後まで辿っていかなければならない。しかし、その間、小説は絶えず、読者に語りかけ、読者に耳を貸し、読者のを引き、読者と一緒に感じ、一緒に考える。それは、途方 (注 3) に暮れるような情報の海を泳ぎ回るのとは、まったく別の興奮を与えてくれるはずだ。
