Questions from the JLPT July 2017 past paper

    Show answer

    Answer: 4.

Option 4 correctly captures the two essential elements of 原初的な科学 as described in the first paragraph: (1) 自然と戯れながら自然の偉大さを学んでいく (learning nature's greatness while engaging with nature) and (2) 好奇心、探求心、美を求める心…

    • 1The passage explicitly says science should abandon the ambition to be useful to the world (世の中に役立とうというような野心を捨て), so this option contradicts the author's view.
    • 2The passage compares science to a Picasso painting on the wall — 'なければないで済ませられる' (one can get by without it) — so it is NOT 'なくてはならない' (indispensable).
    • 3The purpose is not '感性豊かに生きるため' (to live with rich sensibility) but rather to learn nature's greatness and to refine human sensibility to expand human possibility. The framing of '生きるため' shifts the focus incorrectly.
    • 原初的げんしょてき — primitive, original, primordial — here referring to science in its pure, curiosity-driven form
    • たわむれる — to play, to engage with — here: to interact with nature
    • 練磨れんまする — to refine, to polish (one's faculties)
    • 無用の用(むようのよう) — the usefulness of the useless — something not practically necessary but enriching

    Show answer

    Answer: 3.

The underlined sentence 'それでいいのか' refers back to the entire second paragraph, which describes the current dysfunctional state: society demands '役に立つ' science and expects returns on investment, while scientists act like salesmen迎合 (catering to) society's demands, and some even demand more money arrogantly. Both sides view science purely through an economic lens. Option 3 — '社会も科学者も科学を経済的観点からしか見ていないこと' — accurately summarizes what the author wants us to reconsider.

    • 1While the author does mention 'ムダも多いだろう' later, this is a concession, not the main thing being reconsidered. The 'それでいいのか' points to the economic tug-of-war described in paragraph 2.
    • 2The passage does not say society has stopped investing in science; rather, society does invest but demands returns ('
    • 4The author does not claim that neither side should seek returns. In fact, the author acknowledges science needs funding and social support. The problem is the exclusively economic perspective, not the existence of returns per se.
    • 見返みかえ — return, reward (for investment)
    • 迎合げいごうする — to cater to, to pander to
    • 牛耳ぎゅうじ — to control, to dominate
    • 網引き状態(あみびきじょうたい) — tug-of-war state — here, a pull-and-push relationship over money

    Show answer

    Answer: 2.

Science's true contribution to society has been transforming how people view the world (concepts and ideas). Option 2 — changing/overturning the mainstream way of seeing things — matches this. (Note: '履し' in option 2 appears to be a transcription error for '覆し' (くつがえし, to overturn), but the intended meaning is clear.)

    • 1The appearance of geniuses through the accumulation of countless scientists is a supporting detail (その陰には無数の無名の科学者がいた), not the description of science's contribution to society.
    • 3Providing new products is exactly what the author criticizes in paragraph 2 (科学者もセールスマンのように次々に目新しい商品を用意して), not a positive contribution.
    • 4Making people recognize the value of useless things is not described as a past contribution of science. The author argues for this view going forward, not as something already accomplished.
    • 一変いっぺんさせる — to completely change, to transform
    • まんにつく — one in ten thousand — extremely rare probability

    Show answer

    Answer: 1.

The final paragraph states the author's conclusion clearly: '今必要なのは、「文化としての科学」を広く市民に伝えることであり、科学の楽しみを市民とともに共有することである' and 'それらも一緒に紡ぎ合わせることによって「文化としての科学」が豊かになっていくのではないだろうか.' Option 1 — sharing the joy of science with citizens leads to the development of '文化としての科学' — directly matches this main argument.

    • 2The passage does not say citizens should raise their own intellectual curiosity; rather, it says citizens already want intellectual adventure ('市民も知的冒険をしたいのだ'), and the task is for scientists to share science's enjoyment with them.
    • 3The passage does not argue for coexistence of '文化としての科学' and '役に立つ科学.' The author advocates for '文化としての科学' as the primary vision, not a balance between the two.
    • 4The author does not say both types of science should be transmitted together. The focus is specifically on sharing '文化としての科学' and its enjoyment with citizens.
    • 紡ぎ合わせる(つむぎあわせる) — to spin together, to weave together — here: to combine (episodes of success and failure)
