Questions from the JLPT July 2019 past paper

    Show answer

    Answer: 1.

The author states: '過去を生きた人たちの喜びや楽しみにしても、苦労や苦しみにしても、正確にはわれわれはそのごく一面しか推察できないのだ、という限界についての謙虚な自戒が、歴史を問うにはまず必要だと私は考えている' — humble self-awareness of the limitation that we can only infer a very small part of the past is 'first necessary' when asking historical questions. Option 1 correctly captures this: one must recognize that only a part of the past can be grasped.

    • 2The author says reproducing the whole is impossible This option contradicts the passage by urging researchers to try to reproduce everything.
    • 3The text says we can infer 'ごく一面' (a very small part) of past people's feelings, not that we cannot understand them at all. This option is too extreme.
    • 4The author questions whether accurate reproduction is even possible and emphasizes limitations. This option pushes for accurate reproduction, which contradicts the author's argument.
    • れなく — without omission / completely

    Show answer

    Answer: 4.

The phrase 'そうした手続きを踏む' refers back to the procedures described in the preceding paragraph: (1) a person living in the present takes interest in a problem and asks questions about it (問いかけ), and (2) through such questioning, written representations (文字表象) or objects (物体) come to bear value as historical materials. Option 4 correctly summarizes this two-step process: asking questions about a problem of interest, and examining written representations or objects.

    • 1The passage does not mention 'solving' problems through analysis of written representations and objects. The procedure is about asking questions and recognizing materials as sources, not solving problems.
    • 2This reverses the order. The passage says questions come first, then materials gain value. It does not say one should first encounter many valuable materials and then find new problems.
    • 3The passage refers to the researcher's own interest and questions, not understanding 'problems people are interested in.' This misidentifies whose interest is involved.
    • — to go through (a process) / to follow (steps)
    • いかけ — posing a question / inquiry

    Show answer

    Answer: 4.

A historical image (歴史像) is the result of interpretation by someone living in the present, and therefore re-interpretation is always possible. Option 4 correctly captures this: there is a possibility that historical images will be reconstructed through different interpretations.

    • 1The passage does not say that repeated reconstruction leads to clarity It says re-interpretation is always possible, implying ongoing uncertainty rather than eventual clarity.
    • 2The passage says historical images are interpretations by present-day people, not that they are closest to reality. In fact, the author emphasizes they are NOT the actual past
    • 3The passage does not suggest that various interpretations bring us closer to the actual past It says the image is a reconstruction, always subject to re-interpretation, without claiming convergence toward truth.

    Show answer

    Answer: 4.

Option 4 is correct. The passage states that modern social revolution aimed for a society where people are not discriminated against based on their origins (出自), where everyone stands at the same starting line (同じスタートラインにつく), and where 'people can become anything' (ひとは何にでもなれる). This directly corresponds to 'possibilities being equally given to everyone' (誰にでも可能性が平等に与えられる社会). The key idea is equal opportunity — everyone starts from the same point and can achieve anything regardless of birth circumstances.

    • 1This is wrong because the passage does not say that differences in origin (出自の違い) do not exist. It says people should not be *discriminated against* based on origin The differences may still exist; they are simply set aside (度外視). The option conflates 'no discrimination based on differences' with 'no differences,' which is a subtle but important distinction.
    • 2This is wrong because the passage describes education (学校) as a place to learn basic knowledge and skills (基礎的な知識と技能), not as the determinant of one's life. What determines one's value and life shape is 'what one achieves as an individual' (個人として何をなしとげるか), not the education itself. Education is a preparatory step, not the deciding factor.
    • 3This is wrong because the passage does not describe a society where everyone can live equally The focus is on equal *opportunity* (same starting line, freedom to become anything), not equal *outcomes* or equal living standards. The passage explicitly says that after the starting line, individual achievement determines one's value and life shape — implying unequal outcomes are expected.
    • 出自しゅつじ — origin, birth, background (one's social/family background one is born into)
    • 度外視どがいし — setting aside, disregarding, ignoring (treating something as irrelevant)
    • 家柄いえがら — family status, social standing of one's family

    Show answer

    Answer: 3.

Option 3 is correct. (We live in an era where a reason is needed for one's existence, an era where one must find the meaning of one's existence by oneself). People are forced to ask themselves what they 'want to do' precisely because they live in this era — where nothing is predetermined and one must independently discover and clarify the meaning/value of one's own existence. Option 3, '自分の存在価値は自分で明らかにしなければならない' (one must make one's own existential value clear by oneself), directly captures this idea.

    • 1This is wrong because the passage does not frame the issue in terms of 'things decided by others' (ひとに決められたこと). The point is not that others' decisions lack what you want, but rather that in an era where nothing is predetermined (あらかじめ何も決まっていない), you must find your own meaning. The cause is the absence of any predetermined path, not the presence of externally imposed decisions.
    • 2This is wrong because the passage never states that achieving something you don't 'want to do' is meaningless. The logic is the reverse: if you can't see what you want to do, you can't become anything at all (何にもなれない). The issue is about finding direction, not about the meaninglessness of unwanted achievements.
    • 4This is a plausible distractor. It is wrong because it adds the restriction '自分ができることの中から' (from among what one can do), which is not in the original text. The passage says one must '見いだす' (discover/find) the meaning of one's existence by oneself — it does not limit the search to 'what one can do.' Also, '探す' (search) subtly differs from '見いだす' (discover/find), which implies uncovering something that already has meaning rather than merely looking for it.
    • いだす — to discover, to find (especially something abstract like meaning or purpose)
    • わざるをえない — cannot help but ask, is forced to question (問わざる = cannot avoid asking + えない = cannot)
    • 裏を返して言えば(うらをかえしていえば) — put another way, conversely, looking at it from the opposite side
