Questions from the JLPT Dec 2016 past paper

Figure from a reading passage in the JLPT N1 Dec 2016 exam paper

    Answer: 2.

The sentences before 'そんなふうに' describe children observing adults and finding charm: feeling attracted to adults' charm (魅力を感じれば), recognizing charming qualities (チャーミングなところを認めて), and feeling something is stylish (すてきだなと感じる). 'そんなふうに' summarizes this pattern of looking for attractive/appealing aspects in adults. Option 2, '大人の姿から魅力的な部分を探している' (searching for attractive parts in adults' appearance/behavior), captures this.

    • 1While children may want to become adults, the 'そんなふうに' refers specifically to how they observe adults — finding charm — not to a desire to grow up quickly.
    • 3Thinking about one's own failures is not what 'そんなふうに' refers to; the focus is on observing adults and finding appealing qualities in them.
    • 4This is only one of the examples mentioned (あんな大人にはならないだろう), not the overall pattern. The broader pattern includes finding charm and aspiration, not just rejection.

    Show answer

    Answer: 1.

The sentence before 'これほど子どもにとって不幸なことはない' states: if adults have no charm, it is like being told 'you have no tomorrow' (自分に明日がない), and if adults seem boring with no fun, it feels like your future is limited to that level (君の未来はこの程度のものだとつきつけられている). The misfortune is that children cannot find hope for their own future by looking at adults. Option 1, '大人を見ても未来の自分に希望が持てないこと' (not being able to have hope for one's future self even when looking at adults), captures this precisely.

    • 2The passage does not discuss children's confidence in becoming stylish adults; the issue is about losing hope for the future, not confidence.
    • 3The passage does not mention children not knowing what to do now; it is about the bleakness of their future outlook.
    • 4The passage does not mention finding things they want to do; it discusses the loss of hope and excitement about becoming an adult.
    • つきつける(突きつける) — to thrust before someone, to confront with

    Show answer

    Answer: 4.

The author's message to adults is in the final paragraph: rather than being '人生の先輩' (seniors in life), adults should act as 'ベテランの子ども' (veteran children) and show children how to fail well, how to get hurt well — demonstrating 'ベテランらしいところ' (veteran-like qualities). The core message is that adults should model this veteran-child behavior for children. Option 4, '子どもたちに、ベテランの子どもとしての行いを示そう' (show children behavior as a veteran child), matches this directly.

    • 1The author explicitly rejects this: '人生の先輩としてというより' (rather than as a senior in life) and 'いいかっこするのではない' (don't just try to look good). Option 1 contradicts the passage.
    • 2While the passage mentions happy futures for children, the author's direct message is about showing veteran-child behavior, not about guiding children to happiness. This is too indirect.
    • 3Teaching children about an attractive adult world is the hoped-for result of adults' behavior, not the direct message to adults. The message is about how adults should behave (as veteran children), not about teaching.
    • いだす — to discover, to find
