N2 Reading · Test 20

Questions from the JLPT July 2019 past paper

    Show answer

    Answer: 1.

Option 1 is correct. The phrase 'そのような分析' refers back to the immediately preceding description: when things don't go as expected, young people blame '相手が悪い、周囲が悪い、社会が悪い、国が悪い、経済が悪い、運が悪い、時代が悪い' — i.e., they analyze the cause as being everything other than themselves. Option 1 captures this: '自分の期待どおりにならないのは自分以外が原因だと考える' (thinking that when things don't go as expected, the cause is something other than oneself).

    • 2'自分の努力では周囲を変えることはできない' is the author's own observation about why blaming external factors is futile — it is not the 'analysis' that young people themselves make.
    • 3'自分が持っていないものは人から与えてもらえる' describes the expectation mentioned at the beginning of the passage, not the 'analysis' of causes for things not going well.
    • 4'周囲や社会で悪いことが起こっても自分とは関係ない' suggests indifference, but the passage describes young people actively blaming external factors for their own problems, not claiming unrelatedness.
    • 見出みいだ — to find, to discover
    • 模索もさくする — to grope for, to search for
    • 編み出す(あみだす) — to devise, to work out (a new method)

    Show answer

    Answer: 3.

Option 3 is correct because the passage explicitly states the reason people search: '「知る」ことで問題が解決できると信じているせいだ' (because they believe that by 'knowing' (information), problems can be solved). The author explains that in an information society, people interpret their dissatisfaction as being caused by not knowing some piece of information, so they frantically search the internet believing that acquiring knowledge will solve their problems.

    • 1The passage does not say people search to confirm whether their own thought-up solutions are correct. People search because they believe finding information itself will solve the problem, not to verify self-generated solutions.
    • 2The passage actually argues the opposite — that solutions cannot simply be produced from existing information. The author says '自分の問題を解決する方法は、自分で考え、模索し、新たに編み出さなければならない' (one must think, grope, and devise solutions oneself). Searching existing information is presented as insufficient, not as a way to generate solutions.
    • 4The passage mentions that people easily believe friends' stories and overheard things, but it does not say people search because internet information is more reliable than friends' words. The reason given is the belief that 'knowing' solves problems, regardless of the source.
    • 検索けんさく — search, look up (especially on the internet)

    Show answer

    Answer: 3.

Option 3 is correct. The author's main point is stated clearly in the latter half of the passage: '自分の問題を解決する方法は、自分で考え、模索し、新たに編み出さなければならないものなのである' (the method to solve one's own problems must be thought through, groped for, and newly devised by oneself) and '自分で生きながら、見つけるしかないのである' (one has no choice but to find it while living one's own life). The author argues that searching for pre-existing solutions is futile for personal life problems — one must think and create solutions independently.

    • 1While the author does discourage relying on searched information, the emphasis is not on finding a 'different' (人とは違う) way of life, but on solving problems through one's own thinking. The phrase '人とは違う生き方' is not mentioned in the passage.
    • 2This contradicts the passage. The author explicitly says that seniors' words do not fully apply ('先輩の言葉が全面的に通用するわけでもない') and that one cannot rely on others' information to solve personal problems. Using surrounding people's words is presented as part of the problematic behavior, not the solution.
    • 4This is exactly the behavior the author criticizes. The passage argues that searching for necessary information is insufficient for solving one's own life problems, because '検索できるものは、過去に存在した情報だけだ' (what can be searched is only information that existed in the past). The author's message is the opposite of this option.
    • 模索もさくする — to grope for, to search for (a method/solution)
    • 編み出す(あみだす) — to devise, to work out, to produce (a new method/idea)

    Show answer

    Answer: 3.

Option 3 states that A recommends preparing thoroughly, while B says preparation is unnecessary. The passage provided (which appears to be passage B) clearly advocates spontaneous, unplanned travel: going to the station and taking the first available train, deciding where to eat and what to do by asking locals on the spot, and adjusting plans according to circumstances ('状況に合わせて好きなように予定を決めればいい'). This strongly supports B's position that advance preparation is unnecessary. Passage A (which is missing from the transcription) must have argued that thorough preparation is important, making option 3 the correct comparison.

    • 1This says both A and B emphasize thorough preparation. However, B's passage explicitly describes traveling without prior planning—taking the first train, asking locals for recommendations on the spot—so B does NOT advocate thorough preparation.
    • 2This says both A and B prepare first, then adjust plans according to circumstances. While B does mention adjusting plans to circumstances, B never mentions preparing beforehand; the whole point is spontaneous travel with no advance planning.
    • 4This says A recommends not changing prepared plans, while B says preparation is unnecessary. The B part is correct, but the A part (not changing plans) does not match the official answer, which frames A as advocating preparation (not rigidity in keeping plans unchanged).
    • 状況に合わせて(じょうきょうにあわせて) — according to the circumstances

    Show answer

    Answer: 2.

Option 2 states that both A and B describe the enjoyment of travel as experiencing things that cannot be done in daily life. The provided passage (B) explicitly says '日常では味わえない自由な時間が過ごせ、楽しい旅になります' (you can spend free time that cannot be experienced in everyday life, making it an enjoyable trip), which directly matches '日々の生活ではできない経験をすること.' Passage A (missing from the transcription) must contain a similar statement about experiencing things impossible in ordinary daily life.

    • 1This says both A and B describe the enjoyment as listening to local people. While B does mention asking locals for recommendations ('土地の人に話を聞くのが一番'), B's ultimate point about enjoyment is broader—new discoveries and freedom from daily routine—not solely about talking to locals.
    • 3This says A describes spending time without waste, while B describes changing one's mood. B's passage does not mention '気分転換' (change of mood); it focuses on freedom and new discoveries, so this does not match B.
    • 4This says A describes experiences only possible in that region, while B describes making new friends. While B does mention meeting new people ('新しく知り合った人と気が合えば一緒に行動するのも面白い'), B's main point about enjoyment is the freedom and experiences unavailable in daily life, not simply making friends.
    • 日常にちじょう — daily life, everyday life
    • あじわう — to experience, to savor
    • 気が合う(きがあう) — to get along well, to hit it off
